Born in St Austell, the earliest record of Mary Ann in 1871 is a pauper in the Union Workhouse at age 15. She then moves to Devonport where she is recorded as a prostitute in a brothel in East Stonehouse. This seems to be the red light district as all the neighbouring houses have similar occupants. She has a 2 year old daughter with her. By 1891 she is married to a Private in the Royal Marines, but by 1901 she is a widow living with her married daughter and giving her occupation as Rag Sorter.
