William McGOWAN and Mary DOUGHERTY are recorded in the 1841 census living in Bogles Land, Barony Bridgeton (Glasgow), Lanarkshire, Scotland. After the birth of Elizabeth they moved to Ireland where sons James and Thomas were born. No records so far record more specific than Ireland for their place of birth.
By 1861 the family were living in Manchester but without John and Charles. In 1871 they also have a granddaughter with them, Margaret, for whom I cannot find a birth record.
William and Mary move to Dukinfield, Cheshire before 1881 and daughters Mary and Elizabeth live with them at times indicating neither married.
I only have further details of William.

William McGowan moved to Tamworth, Staffordshire and was a Teacher and later a Miller's Commercial Clerk. In 1872 he married Elizabeth DEACON (sometimes recorded with her step-father's surname of TODD). William died in 1887, and Elizabeth about the same time, resulting in the younger children going to the workhouse as orphans. When daughter Margaret married in 1903 she recorded her deceased father's occupation as Musician, and Mary in 1907 as Music Teacher.
The children have been difficult to trace as they dispersed to adoption, workhouses and service. I only have details of Margaret and Mary, although James (Jim) was a witness at Margaret's wedding to Elias.
Margaret McGOWAN
Margaret had moved to Lewisham in Kent by 1901 and married Elias Easterbrook in 1903. After Elias died, Margaret married Charlie EASTON.

This family is no relation but they have been researched as I once believed they were. They lived in the Manchester and Bolton areas.
I believe John has a brother Owen as they were both in lodgings together in Manchester in 1851.
Margaret and Sarah are twins.
