William Hubbard started his working life as an agricultural labourer, but with the expansion of the railways he became a Railway Pointsman and lived in the Railway Pointsman's Cottage while his children were young. Many of his descendants also worked on the railways making this a Railway Family. He married Maria in 1841 and had two children, but she died when they were very young. He then married Lydia who brought up the children from his first marriage as well as producing another 4 children.
