Descendants of Joseph HEMSLEY and Ann ELLERS

Joseph and Ann and most of their descendants were born and lived in or near the city of Nottingham. Many of the family worked in the lace trade either as a manufacturer or retailer.

  William and Mary moved to Castle Donnington in Leicestershire where most of their children were born. Mary is sometimes recorded as Edith.

James Harrison HEMSLEY

James's birth certificate give just Harrison, but most other documents record James or James H.

After his first wife died, James married Elizabeth. She was born illegitimate to Priscilla HADDON, who then married James MANSFIELD and Elizabeth took his name: she is recorded as "Elizabeth Haddon Mansfield" on her marriage certificate to James TOON in 1874. She was recorded as a widow with a surname of TOONE when she married James Harrison HEMSLEY in 1876.

James and Ann's daughter Edith had an illegitimate daughter Annie who lived with James and Elizabeth after Edith married Jonathan HAYNES. Annie's existence was kept a secret from Jonathan and Edith's children until they were adults.
