Descendants of James Capewell of Birmingham

James Capewell was a Shoe Manufacturer in Birmingham, then a Licenced Victualler in Aston. He married Elizabeth FAUGHTLESS in 1833 and they produced 7 children. Elizabeth died sometime between 1847 and 1851 and James remarried in 1852 to Mary Ann MARSHALL with whom he had another 7 children!

James gives his birth place as Coleshill. A search of the parish records give only one match, but only his mother Elizabeth CAPEWELL is recorded. Other close entries in the parish records hint he might have an older brother Joseph born in 1812 and his father is also Joseph who married Elizabeth in 1811. Note: This link is speculative and not properly proven, but the best match so far.

George CAPEWELL (son of James and Elizabeth)

George married Harriet, who died in 1868, and George remarried to Elizabeth Ann HYDE.

The children of George's first marriage all appear in the 1871 census but only Ellen appears in 1881. I have found no close matches for the oldest 3 after 1871.

Further information on Arthur and Walter who in 1901 was living with his widowed father, but married later that year. Both brothers committed suicide.

Arthur CAPEWELL and Louisa HUBBARD

The photograph shows Arthur CAPEWELL, Louisa HUBBARD and their children in 1913: Arthur CAPEWELL (centre of picture), a shoe clicker at the Wheatsheaf Works, committed suicide by revolver to the head on the 25th July 1917 in Western Park, Leicester. His death was reported in the Local Newspaper. Dorothy married Alfred HAYNES, son of Jonathan Edward HAYNES and Edith HEMSLEY. Walter Herbert (top right) died 16 April 1918 in Flanders. He is recorded on the Tyne Cot Memorial.

Walter CAPEWELL and Kate PHIPPS

Walter commited suicide on 17th August 1904 by cutting his throat with a carving knife. He had previously lost 2 fingers in an industrial accident. This left Kate a widow with a young daughter and unborn child. Transcripts of Leicester Advertiser and Leicester Daily Mercury.

Ada Capewell married Frederick George HUGHES, but they don't seem to have had any children. In 1901, their nieces Grace and Ada (daughters of Walter) were recorded with them.

Frank CAPEWELL (son of James and Mary Ann)

  In 1891 Frank is recorded as single, but living with Alice BROADHEAD who is single but with children Lillie M (born in London), Walter M and Ada Capewell. Lillie and Walter are probably not Frank's children, but Ada almost certainly is as she has been named after him. Nelly and probably Polly were born before Frank and Alice married in 1897. In the 1901 census there is no trace of Lillie and Ada, but the other children are living with Frank and Alice and all recorded with the surname CAPEWELL.
